HPC approves storefront sign and façade alteration for 159 Main Street

The Historic Preservation Commission on July 6 approved a certificate of appropriateness allowing new wall-mounted signage and related façade alterations at 159 Main Street, an application filed by Grand Peconic Ventures LLC.

The commission’s chair read the request as a certificate of appropriateness for “the map and signage and façade alterations,” and a motion to approve was made and seconded. Commissioners then conducted a roll-call vote and indicated assent. The chair reminded the applicant not to install any signage until the commission’s resolution and permitting paperwork are complete.

The applicant told the commission that the interior use of the space will change but the exterior treatment largely matches a previously approved design and nearby storefronts; “the only thing that we have changed from that is the sign,” the presenter said, describing the proposed sign as black-and-white, letter-only and intended to match the adjacent façade. Commissioners discussed prior approvals for door and vestibule changes and asked for confirmation of dimensions and appearance before installation.

Commissioners emphasized consistency with the adjacent property’s storefront character as the basis for approval. The motion passed after the roll-call; members who recorded their presence during the vote included Catherine Wilson, Ethan Alter, Michael Bavino and Jason Sia. The commission advised the applicant to await the commission’s resolution and complete permit documentation before installing the new sign.

The Commission’s action was procedural authorization under the certificate-of-appropriateness process; the applicant must follow up with the planning/permit staff for final permits and sign-off.
