Cusseta–Chattahoochee work session prioritizes Friendship Road repairs, flags CUP review and cemetery bylaw work

County commissioners used a Jan. 27 work session to set priorities for early 2025, focusing on road repairs, planning-process tweaks and cemetery bylaw work.
County Manager Thomas Weaver told the commission that budget season is approaching and proposed agenda items for the Feb. 4 regular meeting. Commissioners agreed to prioritize Friendship Road for 2024 LMIG funding because of its poor condition and asked staff to begin adding road projects to future work sessions. Commissioners noted Liberty Hill Road is nearby and may be considered in the same package.
The board directed staff to schedule a follow-up work session on Feb. 24 (proposed as an evening meeting) to review and clarify the county’s Conditional Use Permit process and to invite the Planning & Zoning Board to participate. Planning & Zoning also proposed reducing its membership from seven to five and several reappointments (Randy Register, Teresa Smith and Willie Brown) were proposed for the next regular meeting agenda.
Commissioners asked the county attorney to work with a cemetery committee to draft a new ordinance article governing county cemeteries; the county manager said historical records are incomplete but that future burials and records will be maintained correctly.
Department heads gave operational updates: Parks & Recreation reported that baseball is upcoming and the department needs umpires and staff; public-works staff reported that well #4 required a replacement box and breaker (which appeared to fix a recurring problem), two laborers were hired, several hydrants were raised and the water-tower floor requires replacement. Animal-control staff reported a recent increase in stray dogs, some wearing collars, suggesting possible dumping. The work session entered executive session at 10:12 a.m. to discuss legal, personnel and real-estate matters and reconvened at 10:55 a.m.; no votes were taken in closed session. The meeting adjourned at 10:58 a.m.
The items discussed at the work session will be placed on upcoming agendas for formal action as needed.
