Resident says she was fined $260 after missed court notice; commissioners to check 911 address
Summary
At a Sept. 23 work session, Christine Richards said she was fined $260 after not receiving a court notice she believes was lost due to an address/911 sign discrepancy; County Manager Thomas Weaver said judges set fines and the Commission cannot overturn them, but staff agreed to investigate the 911 sign and water bill delivery issues Richards raised.

During the Sept. 23 work session, Christine Richards spoke during public comment that she received a notice to appear in court on Aug. 16 but said she did not receive any prior warning and later was charged $260. Richards said her 911 address had shown as 145 for the last two years while her actual address is 140, and she suggested the discrepancy may have caused her to miss a mailed notice.
Chairman Charles Coffey and County Manager Thomas Weaver responded. County Manager Weaver clarified that the Commission cannot intervene in fines imposed by judges. Chairman Coffey told Richards the county would look into the 911 sign and address and staff would follow up; Richards also reported problems receiving her water bill. Coffey emphasized treating people with respect and requested civility at meetings.
The Commission asked staff to investigate the 911 sign/address discrepancy and billing delivery issues Richards described; the work-session minutes record no formal remedy for the court fine because the imposition of the fine was a judicial, not a Commission, action.
