Jennings County Council approves purchase of 2027 transport van for sheriff's office

The Jennings County Council voted to approve financing for a 2027 Chrysler Pacifica to be used for jail transport, with the amount to be financed stated as $39,861.50 and two older vehicles to be traded in.
Austin Peppermint, who presented the request, told the council the department had only received funds for one vehicle previously and that maintenance problems and two recent breakdowns created a “huge safety and security risk for our officers” on the interstate. "The amount financed would be needed is 39,861.50," he said.
Council members discussed whether a separate appropriation was required. One member noted the purchase was covered by bond funding and would not require a separate appropriation from the council’s operating budget. The council moved and seconded the purchase and called a voice vote; the chair then closed the item and thanked the presenter.
Speakers also discussed logistics after purchase: the two decommissioned vans will be removed from the fleet and traded in, and staff were asked to notify county insurance staff to update coverage when the new vehicle is brought online.
The motion to approve the purchase was moved, seconded and put to a voice vote; the council proceeded to the next agenda item after the vote was called.
