Galesburg council approves part-time hire, grants Front Porch lease and waives fees for Greater Galesburg Days

The Galesburg City Council on June 2 approved a package of personnel, community-support and administrative actions, including hiring a part-time administrative assistant, approving a $100 annual lease for the lot behind the Front Porch business and waiving municipal fees tied to Greater Galesburg Days.
On personnel, Councilmember Roger Frazee moved to hire a part-time administrative assistant to replace Jamie Thoms in that role; the motion passed 5–2. The five “Aye” votes were Anthony Tipken, Ryan Harnden, Roger Frazee, Stanley Chovanec and Mayor Linda Marble; Glen Hawes and Carol Wortinger voted “Nay.” Frazee emphasized the workload in the clerk’s office and the risk of employee burnout: “I can see when I go in there, they need help,” he said. Hawes said he was concerned about spending but did not stop the motion.
Business and community-support decisions included approval of a locked dumpster behind the Front Porch and a separate motion to lease the lot behind the business for $100 per year; both motions carried (dumpster by voice vote; lease approved on a roll-call vote). New owner Jennifer Hilton said the business — to be renamed Wobbly Wagon Ice Cream and more — aims to operate year-round but may be seasonal this year.
To support Greater Galesburg Days, the council voted to waive food-truck fees, waive garage-sale permits for June 19–22 and allow the GABCA group to use tables, chairs, the parking lot and the park behind City Hall. Motions to permit the use of facilities and to waive garage-sale permits passed on voice votes; the motion to waive food-truck fees passed on a roll-call vote with all members voting “Aye.”
The council also approved a $6,000 uniform budget for DPW staff after Supervisor Ranes described uniform-cleanliness issues and presented a quote from Cintas. Other routine actions included appointing Anthony Tipken to the Zoning Board of Appeals and approving DDA appointments for Linda Carlton and Art Green. Several items were tabled for later meetings, including the police agreement, the city-hall roof bids and a permit waiver request from Milestone Senior Services.
The council set the date for final budget adoption: June 23. Several items remain to be finalized in the 2025–26 budget packet, including DPW barn funding and potential painting/roof costs.
