The Galesburg City Council on July 7 appointed DPW Supervisor Josh Ranes as the city's Operator in Charge for the water system and approved a $90,000 salary, while deferring detailed discussion of fringe benefits and vehicle arrangements to a July 10 follow-up.
Supervisor Ranes presented an explanation of duties and a proposed fringe-benefit mechanism whereby the employee would fund a leased vehicle from wages and repay the lease; Marble said the fringe benefit would pay for a replacement vehicle every eight years. Ranes said 73% of his time would be spent on water-related duties and described the employee-funded vehicle arrangement.
Councilor Anthony Tipken and others stressed that the truck would remain city property if the employee left and that council should discuss fringe-benefit mechanics further. Councilor Glen Hawes asked why another truck was needed; Tipken and Marble explained the existing older truck's engine is failing and the city already pays approximately $62,525 annually to Gull Lake Sewer and Water Authority for services.
Hawes moved to appoint Ranes as Operator in Charge at a $90,000 salary and defer fringe-benefit specifics to July 10; the motion passed by roll call vote.
What happens next: The appointment takes effect immediately; council will address fringe-benefit details and vehicle arrangements at the July 10 follow-up meeting.
