The Galesburg City Council on July 7 adopted amendments to Ordinance 303, the city's rental ordinance, after a public hearing in which a few residents voiced opposition.
Mayor Linda Marble explained the proposed amendments would make rental registration follow the calendar year rather than the fiscal year and would allow owners who pass inspection to skip the following year's inspection while still paying the registration fee. A handful of citizens expressed opposition during the public-hearing portion; Marble and Councilor Glen Hawes both said they were not ready to repeal the ordinance but supported reviewing it again at a later date.
Councilor Roger Frazee moved to adopt Ordinance 303 with the understanding the council would revisit the ordinance later; the motion carried unanimously.
Why it matters: Rental-registration programs govern inspections, registration fees and enforcement that affect landlords and tenants. The council's amendments change inspection timing for compliant property owners and set a path for future review.
What happens next: The ordinance amendments are effective as adopted; councilors said they will schedule a future discussion to assess the ordinance's impact since its inception three years ago.
