Select Board liaison: Kennebunk earns SolSmart Bronze, committee eyes Silver and EV charger siting

Karina Graeter, the Select Board liaison, told the Kennebunk Climate Action Committee on May 18 that the town has achieved SolSmart Bronze status and is close to meeting Silver criteria.
The committee heard that Graeter and staff member Lee Jay are preparing a solar resource hub for the town website and will present a draft at the June meeting so the town can complete outstanding steps by July 1, 2026. The committee directed Graeter to incorporate suggestions from members and provide the draft to town staff for formatting.
Graeter also reviewed the Transportation Emissions Study and a draft Kennebunk Move Analysis. She said transportation data are accessible through TomTom, and the analysis shows West Kennebunk has the highest number of trips — a proxy for higher local transportation emissions. Committee members discussed using that data to prioritize EV charging station siting near the school and at Corning, and they agreed to share the draft data with the West Kennebunk committee for localized planning.
The discussion produced next steps rather than formal action: committee members assigned follow-up tasks to finalize the website resource hub and to circulate the transportation data for further local review. No formal vote was recorded on siting recommendations.
The committee expects to review the SolSmart website draft at its June meeting and to pursue Silver eligibility after incorporating the committee’s feedback.
