Brooks holds first reading of ordinance to bar heavy trucks on Gable Road

The Brooks Town Council held a public hearing Oct. 21 for the first reading of Ordinance 2024-02, which would prohibit vehicles over FHWA Class 3 on Gable Road between McIntosh Road and the Highway 85 Connector.
M. Ungaro reviewed the proposed ordinance, saying its intent is to "provide for a safe and controlled environment" for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians on the roughly ten-foot-wide roadway. Ungaro explained FHWA Class 3 covers vehicles between 10,001 and 14,000 pounds and noted the restriction is intended to prevent large semi-trucks with trailers from attempting to use the narrow road.
No action was taken on the ordinance during the Oct. 21 meeting; the item will be read again at the council's Nov. 18 meeting. Residents raised enforcement questions: Jason Banks asked whether the restriction would be enforced with signage or additional measures. Ungaro said there is currently no signage and that, if an ordinance is passed, signage would be posted and the sheriff's office would be notified to ticket violators, but added that an ordinance must be passed before official signs can be installed.
Why it matters: the proposed restriction responds to safety concerns on a narrow town roadway and would allow the town and county law enforcement to cite violators under a local ordinance once adopted. The council has not yet decided whether to adopt the ordinance and will revisit the proposal at its Nov. 18 meeting.
