Family’s return to 138 Main Street delayed by permitting; town seeks short-term options

Tonya Nicholls told the board that a family is eager to return to their home at 138 Main Street and asked the Selectmen to help move permitting along. The board previously requested that the City of Keene take over permitting and inspections for this property because of interpersonal issues between local parties; Keene has received the application and plans but has not cleared the work quickly enough to satisfy the homeowner and contractor.
Mike Wilber reported he had contacted the State Fire Marshal’s Office as an alternative, but the Marshal’s office said it would be several weeks before it could perform inspections. Contractor representative John Jeremy said he would draft a memo to the City of Keene asking whether some work—such as cementing the dirt basement floor—could begin immediately while formal inspections and approvals are pending.
Ms. Nicholls confirmed the property contains three residential units. The board did not take a formal vote on permitting at the meeting; members instructed staff and the contractor to pursue the memorandum to Keene and to keep the Selectmen informed on whether limited interim work can be allowed to speed the family’s return to the home.
