Elections board reviews proposed standardized advance-voting schedule, schedules work session

The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections reviewed a proposed template for advance voting schedules that would standardize planning for long- and short-ballot elections, special elections and runoffs; the board asked staff to hold a work session and expects a vote on the November schedule in August.
At its July 7 meeting, the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections and Voter Registration considered a proposed template intended to standardize advance voting schedules for long-ballot and short-ballot general elections, special elections and runoffs.
Elections Director Pam Long said the template includes model options that vary by the number of early-voting locations and the number of extended-hour days (7 a.m.–7 p.m.). Long said the purpose is to "allow Elections Department staff to plan and budget further in advance as well as provide consistency for the voters of Athens-Clarke County." The presentation and discussion were at the request of staff to help make planning and budgeting more predictable.
Board members questioned details and asked to refine the models before a final vote. The board directed staff to schedule a work session to further develop the template; Long told the board it will still need to vote on an advance voting schedule for the November general election in August. Long also noted that a finalized template does not have to be in place for the board to approve a November plan.
The next procedural step is the planned work session to refine options and any follow-up materials staff will provide; the board is scheduled to consider an advance voting schedule for the Nov. 3 election at its August meeting.
