Board takes first reading on IKF: keeps 28-credit, 3.5 GPA but loosens honors diploma course prescription

The Newberg School District 29J board conducted a first reading of policy IKF on July 14, which outlines graduation requirements and proposed changes to the district's honors diploma. Mark Brown presented the draft, saying the district will keep the 28-credit total and the state's 3.5 GPA threshold for honors but would change the honors diploma so that students need six advanced credits that can come from a range of advanced or career-technical (CTE) courses rather than a prescriptive list.
"The big change that we're wanting to make is to make it go less away from the prescriptive approach and let kids have choice in where they take their advanced [classes]," Brown said, explaining that advanced credits include AP and dual-enrollment courses and certain high-level CTE and health-science classes.
Brown said the policy change is not intended to disqualify students already on track for honors; all students currently on track will remain eligible because the total required number of advanced credits remains six. Board members asked for examples of advanced credits and requested the graphics used in policy committee discussions be shared in the board packet for clarity.
The board indicated the revised IKF will be placed on the consent agenda at the next meeting for potential approval; if needed, members can pull it for further discussion.
