Malden board approves variance for larger wall sign at 869 Eastern Ave

At a public hearing, the petitioner—identified on the agenda as F W Webb—sought relief under the city code (Title 4, §4.16.090 c2a, table of intensity regulations) for signage at the property (Assessor parcel ID 127435504). Benny of Sign Art, speaking for the applicant, told the board the applicant had reduced the sign options and that the smallest design measured about 60 square feet; another option measured about 67 square feet, down from an earlier 75-square-foot design. "The smallest we got it down to was 60 square feet and we also have an option of 67 square feet instead of the 75," Benny said.
Board members asked questions about proportions and legibility; the chair and members agreed the smaller designs remained proportionate on the building. A motion to approve "option C" was made, seconded and passed on a unanimous roll call. The motion was recorded as moved by Bilgin and seconded by King; the vote was recorded as yes from Bilgin, Desposito, King, Alex Yu, Sherwin and Kramer, with member Frey absent.
The board did not report additional conditions on the variance at the hearing. After the vote the applicant thanked the board and the hearing moved on to the next petition.
The petition record lists the project plans under reference SG E R 07638-2026 and the board placed the approved option in the file.
