Mayor Rok: EPA Level 1 assessment underway after coliform positives in Town water samples

Mayor Rok told the Town Council at its June 10 work session that the Town received a Total Coliform positive (TC+) result from a June 2 water sample and followed state and federal protocol by collecting four additional samples. "Coliform is naturally occurring in the environment, and a positive test does not necessarily indicate a problem but requires additional verification steps," Mayor Rok said. Two upstream samples also tested positive, which prompted an EPA Level 1 Assessment of the Town's water system.
Town staff said the positive retests required the additional sampling and that the Town has maintained open communication with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency while completing required testing. The Council was told the Town is complying with testing and reporting obligations and is working with the EPA as the assessment proceeds.
The council also received updates on planned water projects. Town Engineer Ryan Welling reported he has completed the bid requirements for lining the Green Canyon Tank and said vendors offer EPA-approved products for interior and exterior tank lining, some with 10-year product guarantees. Staff scheduled a pre-bid meeting for June 26 and expects to open bids on July 8.
Other water-related items noted at the work session included a submitted permit application for maintenance on the Prater Springs line and a change order under review for paving at the new Middle Branch crossing. Councilman Bitter urged the Council and Water Board to develop a 10-year water infrastructure schedule tied to the Town’s Water Master Plan to guide reserve targets and rate decisions.
Next steps: the EPA Level 1 Assessment is underway; Town staff will continue required testing and will provide updates as results and any corrective actions become available. The Green Canyon Tank pre-bid meeting is set for June 26 and the formal bid opening for July 8.
