Dr. Kern’s letter, which was read aloud to the board, said he was stepping down “due to private and personal reasons that require my full attention.” The letter was also filed with Deborah Bingham, clerk of the circuit court, according to the statement read to the board.
Board members and the superintendent told an online caller that the board will work with legal counsel and follow Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) policy and state timelines to fill the vacancy. Superintendent Karen Leslie said the board is “working with the board, of course, to ensure that we follow all of the policies and procedures and all the legal timelines” and that a public timeline and application information will be released once procedures are finalized.
The resignation was announced alongside routine business during the meeting; the board did not take an immediate vote on an interim appointment at the session. The board said it will make next steps public after consulting counsel and confirming the process required by VSBA guidance and state law.
