Somers board approves minutes and consent items, recognizes retirees; Somers Education Foundation reports $84,000 in awards

At its May 26 meeting the Somers Board of Education approved the May 11 meeting minutes and the consent agenda and used the public session to recognize district retirees and receive a Somers Education Foundation update.
A motion to approve the May 11, 2026 minutes was made by JT Galloway and seconded by Kim Radziewicz; the record shows the motion carried with five yeas, zero nays, one abstention (Gina Olearczyk) and three absences (Mike Briggs, Ed DePeau and Derek Zelek). The consent agenda was later approved by voice vote; the public minutes list resignations for Emma Dashnaw (MLL paraeducator, resigning end of 2025–26) and Krista Oliver (SES paraeducator, effective May 28, 2026).
The Board honored six retirees: Michael McDonnell (SES assistant principal, 23 years), Kim LaBroad (SES paraeducator, 11.5 years), Therese Kowalski (SES paraeducator/Library Media, 12 years), Kevin Nevins (MBA language arts, more than 30 years), and Stan Targonski (MBA math teacher, 40 years). Administrators Melissa Mucci and Margot Martello presented the recognitions.
During CIP/SEF reports the Somers Education Foundation said it awarded over $84,000 in grants this year and maintained an endowment of approximately $1.4 million to support district programming. No formal Board action on the foundation update was recorded.
The meeting moved into executive session at 7:47 p.m. to hear a report on the superintendent’s goals; the Board exited executive session at 8:53 p.m. and adjourned at 8:54 p.m.
