Student representatives report trips, contests and new lunch recycling program at SHS

Student representatives Aja Drummond and Jessica Chen briefed the Board on recent and upcoming Somers High School events and programs and asked for changes to advisory classes.
The students highlighted international and regional trips (Spain, Quebec, Washington, D.C.), the Trade Fair (which had 15–20 new speakers this year), SAT Academy activities, and successful spring sports records. They said photos and student feedback showed the Trade Fair was more hands-on than in previous years. The representatives also announced a new recycling program that began April 27 to reduce food waste during lunch; the program was inspired by a student Capstone project.
In response to a question from Chair Briggs about how the Board can better support students, the representatives asked that the biweekly advisory time be refreshed because many students find the advisory blocks repetitive and believe the time could instead help build school community and communication skills.
Why it matters: Student-led initiatives and feedback inform district priorities on student experience, sustainability practices and curriculum choices.
What’s next: The Board thanked the student representatives and will consider their requests during future student-support and curriculum discussions.
