Somers Board honors four students with CABE Student Leadership Awards

The Somers Board of Education on May 11 recognized four students with Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) Student Leadership Awards, praising their leadership, service and contributions to school life.
MBA Principal Margot Martello presented awards to Annabelle Kochanek and Weston Cass. Martello said the CABE award “honors students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, a willingness to take on challenges, mature decision-making, teamwork, diplomacy, and integrity.” She described Annabelle as a collaborative student who started a student book club and participates in cross-country, drama, band and chorus. Martello noted Weston’s civic and athletic leadership — including induction into the National Junior Beta Club and two years as a peer-selected cross-country captain — and his mentorship of younger wrestlers.
Dr. Jamie Rechenberg, SHS principal, presented awards to Dana Storozuk and Wyatt Estes. Rechenberg said Storozuk has worked to ensure the student voice is included in school discussions and praised her for “proactive advocacy” and resilience. She described Estes as “a natural leader” whose kindness and humility draw peers to him.
Chair Mike Briggs said recognizing student leaders is a key part of the Board’s work and expressed pride in the students’ examples for their peers. The Board did not take action related to the awards; the presentations were ceremonial recognition.
