Board reviews plan to compress Explorations in Algebra I into a single year

The Somers Board of Education on March 23 considered a proposed modification to Explorations in Algebra I that would convert the current two-year sequence into a single-year course.
Board Member Ed DePeau said the current two-year structure has not produced the strongest outcomes for students and that a one-year course would allow students to complete more high-school-level math, cover additional content, and create greater opportunities to enroll in higher-level math classes. He told the board the revised curriculum is aligned with the Connecticut model curriculum and would not affect students who already take Algebra I in eighth grade.
Dr. Jaime Rechenberg said the proposed course narrows instruction to a prioritized set of Algebra I standards intended to better prepare students for Algebra II. She said the district plans to remove supplementary standards and focus instruction on essential content, and that under the previous structure students effectively earned two credits for a single body of work, which can delay progress into geometry and beyond.
Board discussion focused on academic readiness and standardized-test implications. DePeau linked course sequencing to SAT preparedness, arguing that students who spend both freshman and sophomore years in Algebra I may be less prepared for college-entrance testing if they delay geometry and higher-level coursework.
The proposal was posted for first reading and referred to the Curriculum Committee for further review; no formal vote to adopt the change was taken at the March 23 meeting. Next steps include committee review and subsequent board postings required by district policy before any curriculum adoption.
