UDOT crews start SR‑9 fiber installation; work to approach Rockville within weeks

A UDOT representative told the Rockville council on June 10 that crews began installing fiber‑optic cable along State Route 9 and the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway on June 3 and expect work to reach the Springdale/Rockville area within one to two weeks.
"UDOT is bringing fiber optics along State Route 9 ... this project will tie in and help support UDOT's intelligent transportation systems," Ava Pecora said via Zoom, describing work to support traffic cameras, weather stations and broader traffic management systems. Pecora said crews have trenched about 2,500 feet to date and are working both near Hurricane and inside Zion National Park.
Contractor Darren Bradshaw said the fiber will be buried at about 30 inches below the road surface. Pecora said crews will pause construction from July 3 through July 7 to avoid holiday travel impacts. Residents may contact the project team by phone or email and weekly construction updates are posted on the project website, Pecora added.
No traffic impacts were reported for the Hurricane‑area work at the time of the update. The council and staff said they will forward project information to town email lists and residents.
