The commission spent the second half of its meeting reviewing a draft strategic plan and several public‑art and outreach items.
Chair West summarized a visioning exercise that identified stakeholders and priorities including improved communications and marketing, mentor programs and arts education, an inventory of local artists and institutions, and exploring whether the city should create an arts‑and‑culture staff role to help implement the plan.
Commissioners urged clearer communications—press releases, workshops and a master calendar of events—and recommended workshops for prospective applicants. Commissioner Carolyn reported she is compiling a comprehensive artist and gallery spreadsheet and asked the commission to consider adding a public community calendar to the commission’s web page.
On public art, the commission reported the mural installed between Pixies General Store and Forage florist was inspected by the mural jury and found to meet the ordinance criteria; the mural was formally accepted. Commissioners also discussed conservation of the Matilija Poppy Fountain and a staff effort to audit the public‑art fund balance; staff expects the fund report to be ready in August.
Staff said they are tracking social‑media policy updates and will advise commissioners when the city’s updated policy is available; staff reiterated the preference that commissioners use city email addresses for official business to reduce public‑records complications.
The commission agreed to prioritize a shorter list of strategic tasks, ask staff to provide a prioritized road map and to report back in coming months.
