DPW reports refuse totals, opens Sakowich Park and plans cameras after park incident

Igor Sikiric, Superintendent of the Department of Public Works, reported routine operations and refuse totals for May 2026: 495 tons of refuse and recycling in total, including 416 tons of municipal solid waste, 19 tons of commingled recyclables, 19 tons of construction-and-demolition material and 25 tons of yard waste. Sikiric also said about 25 potholes and eight road repairs were completed in May, and DPW conducted seven tree trims and two removals.

Sakiric reported that Sakowich Park renovation is complete and the park has been fully opened to the public. The DPW renovation project is mostly complete and staff are waiting for final contractor punch-list items to be finished.

Mayor Christopher Devane told the board that an incident of human feces in a Memorial Park restroom prompted a decision to install cameras at both Memorial Park and Sakowich Park. "Due to the incident in the men’s room at Memorial Park and we will be putting cameras at both parks," Mayor Devane said during the meeting. DPW staff and park attendants will continue routine maintenance; the mayor thanked Tommy Kane, the new lead park attendant, for oversight of park operations.

Trustees also discussed a tree-management policy, with the mayor noting that healthy trees will not be removed and that arborist reviews inform tree decisions. Residents were reminded that yard-waste collection is curbside through November and should be for homeowner debris only; landscaper-collected debris should not be placed at the curb for village pick-up.

The board recorded these operational updates as routine reports; no formal votes were needed for DPW operational matters reported at the meeting.
