New Hyde Park closes $2.5 million bond, redirects funds to community center; Marcus Christ Hall nears completion

The Board of Trustees of the Village of New Hyde Park closed a $2.5 million bond on June 16 to finance a community center project rather than the road work originally contemplated, officials said.

Rebecca Sheehan, Village Clerk-Treasurer, told the board that the Clerk’s Office closed the $2.5 million bond on Tuesday, June 16; the bond will be repaid over 15 years. Mayor Christopher Devane said the financing carried an AA+ rating and that the village decided to redirect the funds to rebuild a community center instead of pursuing road work.

Trustee Rainer Burger reported that construction on Marcus Christ Hall — the village’s community center project — is progressing. “Full painting is underway, the majority of rough electric and plumbing are complete, all interior and exterior doors have been installed,” Burger said, and he noted bathrooms are being tiled and finishing work is ongoing. The board was told the project is expected to finish in July or August 2026, with a grand-opening celebration planned for September.

Mayor Devane also thanked staff and the village attorneys for their work on the financing and noted the village is negotiating a new six-year collective bargaining agreement with union employees. He said ongoing contractor punch-list items remain for DPW renovation work but that Marcus Christ Hall’s interior and exterior work is in the final stages.

The board voted unanimously on related resolutions earlier in the meeting. No public vote on the bond was recorded during the meeting; all actions described were presented as updates and routine approvals. The trustees moved to executive session at the end of the meeting and reconvened briefly before adjournment.
