Burley planning commission seeks tighter rules for food trucks after staff report

McArthur, a city staff member, told the Burley Planning & Zoning Commission at its March 18 meeting that unregulated food trucks are appearing more frequently in random locations across the city and creating safety and code-compliance problems.
McArthur described a range of issues, including improper locations, unauthorized utility connections, unsafe disconnections and parking violations, and said he has video of trucks he believes never went through the city approval process. The presentation included a proposal to designate specific areas for food trucks, described in the meeting as a potential "food truck subdivision."
Commissioners asked McArthur to quantify the scope of the problem; several requested the percentage of food trucks operating in city limits that are noncompliant. Commissioners also said they view the matter as largely a code-enforcement issue but asked for more in-depth information before making regulatory recommendations, noting current enforcement staff capacity is limited.
The commission did not adopt any new rules at the meeting. Members asked that staff return with data and further analysis to inform possible changes to placement rules, enforcement approaches or designated food-truck locations.
