Norton Shores council hears updates on redevelopment interest, trail planning and splash pad fundraising

At the June 16 Norton Shores City Council meeting, members heard multiple operational updates and community concerns.
Police Chief Marc Vanderstelt told the council there were no new developments in the missing person case involving Lee Longmire Jr. Council Member Halloran had requested the update.
City Administrator Anthony Chandler said he recently met with RD Management and that the company has expressed interest in redeveloping the commercial portion of the former Plaza site and the former Kmart property. Zoning Administrator Ted Woodcock said renovations are underway at the former Tony's location and that a new business is moving into that space.
Council Member Kasher raised safety concerns about the number of children crossing McCracken Street and asked whether a crosswalk is needed; Council Member Fox supported the suggestion and Council Member Fisher asked whether a crossing guard could be beneficial. Mayor Nelund responded that crossing guards are typically located nearer school properties.
Chandler reported staff have been working with engineering consultant Spicer on planning for a Lake Harbor Trail extension and that authorization to bid will be presented to the council in the future. Mayor Nelund said he will meet with the West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission (WMSRDC) to discuss potential funding to connect Dune Harbor Park to the Roosevelt Park trail system. Chandler confirmed a joint meeting with Roosevelt Park and the Mona Shores Board of Education is scheduled for Oct. 6 following the regular council meeting.
Council Member Jurkas asked for an update on the proposed splash pad at Lake Harbor Park; Chandler said fundraising is ongoing, and Mayor Nelund added that some donated funds are tied to an estate and therefore cannot be redirected to other projects such as parking improvements.
