The Unified School District #286 Board of Education on May 11 approved a 40% discount for full-time district staff who use the district daycare, passing the measure 4-2. Board President Kensey Williams presided as the motion was made by board member Kelsy Sproul and seconded by Wesley Wilson; board members Jonathan Cude and Becky Smilko voted against the discount.
The discount was the most contested vote of the night. Board discussion preceded the ballot but the board did not record additional conditions or an implementation date during the open session.
The board approved several other new-business items in the same meeting. The board voted 6-0 to adopt an amended Activity Policy after a motion by Sproul and a second by Jonathan Cude. The Early Learning Center (ELC) handbook was discussed but tabled for further review after members identified inconsistencies. The board approved a memorandum of agreement with the city recreation department 6-0 on a motion by Becky Smilko, and approved a summer weights supplemental not to exceed $3,200 for an eight-week program on a motion by Wesley Wilson; that supplemental passed 6-1 with Cude dissenting.
