Caney council approves July 4 bull-riding event, evening 5K, lists cemetery shop and accepts two CDBG rehab bids

Jon Harrington, representing the Caney Saddle Club, presented the Fourth of July event and said the club will move the “walk out” earlier so fireworks can be launched by 10 p.m. Council President Jeff Culver moved to approve the arena event for July 4; Council Member Becky Dye seconded and the motion carried 4-0.
Staff told the council that Delaware Tribe members were not present but that the Tribe plans an evening 5K in August and is working with a contractor on the race route. Mayor Josh Elliott instructed staff to coordinate the route with the Police Department. Council President Culver moved to approve the 5K and to have staff work with the Tribe; the motion carried 4-0.
On property disposition, staff said they had difficulty reaching an appraiser for the cemetery shop and instead contacted the realtor who handled the old fire station sale; that realtor pulled comparables and recommended listing the building at $50,000. Council Member Elizabeth Burch moved to list the property with Heritage Homes EXP Realty, seconded by Council Member Jesse Hilyard; the motion passed 4-0.
On housing work supported by a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), staff reported bids received from DNA Contracting for rehabilitation at 108 W Taylor and 300 N Fawn and a demolition bid from Barker Demolitions for 110 N Fawn. Staff advised accepting the two rehabilitation bids (reported at or under budget) and rejecting the demolition bid (described as significantly above estimate). Council Member Hilyard moved to accept the two rehab bids and reject the demolition bid; the motion carried 4-0. Because only one contract was received for the rehabs, council also authorized signatures on a sole source letter required by the Department of Commerce so the projects may proceed.
