The applicant had installed two 50-foot poles without prior approval; staff recommended disapproval of the flagpole variance, saying the proposal was inconsistent with the code's intent to promote signage that is "aesthetically harmonious with its surroundings." The monument-sign issues were noted in the staff packet but were not part of this appeal.
Board members clarified the appellate role of the BZA: the body is reviewing the Planning & Zoning Commission's decision on the record, and voting "yes" on the motion would uphold the Planning & Zoning denial. After brief questions to staff about the origin of the height standards and confirmation that the existing poles are 50 feet, a board member moved to uphold the PNC denial; the motion was seconded and carried on roll call.
The clerk recorded affirmative votes from Mister Steele, Mister Bucci, Mister Mills, Mister Blythe, Vice President McGee and President Deisel; the motion carried to uphold the denial.
