USD 505 board adopts KESA action plan, approves open-enrollment policy and staffing hires

At its Nov. 10 meeting in Labette County, the USD 505 Board of Education adopted a KESA action plan prioritizing structured literacy, approved an open-enrollment policy effective immediately, accepted several coaching and substitute hires and accepted a board resignation. The board held multiple executive sessions on student and personnel matters and returned to open session with no public action.
Roberta Carter, board president, called the Unified School District No. 505 Board of Education meeting to order at 7 p.m. on Nov. 10 in Labette County. The board approved the agenda and the consent agenda, including October minutes and the November bills.
Kari Chambers moved, and Seth Born seconded, to approve the agenda as presented; the motion passed, 6-0. Chambers later moved to approve the consent agenda; Josh Baker seconded and the motion passed, 6-0.
On instructional policy, the board accepted a new KESA action plan intended to focus evaluations on structured literacy. "I make a motion to accept the new KESA Action Plan as presented," said Seth Born; Josh Baker seconded and the motion passed, 6-0. Administration told the board the KESA plan will reorient evaluations toward structured-literacy practices.
The board also approved an Open Enrollment Policy "effective immediately and until such time as it is rescinded or replaced." Seth Born moved to approve the policy and Kari Chambers seconded; the motion passed, 6-0.
Board members approved several procurement and personnel items. The board accepted bids for Chetopa basketball uniforms as presented (motion by Kari Chambers; seconded by Josh Baker; passed 6-0). Chambers moved and Barbara Evans seconded a motion to accept the resignation of Seth Born as member at-large; the motion passed, 5-0.
After executive sessions (see separate item), the board approved a slate of substitute teachers and coaching hires. A motion by Kari Chambers, seconded by Josh Baker, approved Jessica Lehman and Jerri Shelton as substitute teachers; Seth Born as assistant SPHS and SPMS boys basketball coach; Jason Wammack as CHS head baseball coach; Rogan Bruce as CHS assistant baseball coach; Jena Darnell as CHS head softball coach; Charley Riker as CHS assistant softball coach; and Corie Brown as Chetopa HS and Chetopa MS assistant boys basketball coach. The board also approved Dustin Ewan as special-education route driver at St. Paul. Both motions passed, 5-0.
In other business, principals from Chetopa and St. Paul reported school activities and programs: teacher evaluations completed, upcoming veterans programs, full junior high and high school basketball rosters, student food drives, career-exploration activities with Labette Community College, and holiday-program schedules. Josh Brennon, district technology, reported a free computer upgrade for Dr. Williams and purchases of toner and a battery totaling $138.38. Dr. Williams also said a planned hire under a PSU literacy grant fell through and that Title I teachers will serve as literacy coaches and receive grant funds.
