Chetopa and St. Paul administrators report student activities, assessments and facilities needs

At the Unified School District No. 505 board meeting on Oct. 13, building administrators and staff reviewed recent student activities, assessments and facility concerns.
Renee Gillard, St. Paul administrator, outlined student activities including a 5-mile camp, grandparents day events that required two sessions because of turnout, fall safety drills, and planning for freshmen to visit PSU on Nov. 5 for exposure to medical careers. Gillard said juniors will take the ACT and noted a student request to participate in wrestling.
Jolene Hall, Chetopa K–12 administrator, said MTSS groups have started, parent-teacher conference turnout was strong, and staff discussed student IPS goals with families. Hall reported that the district received state assessment results but cautioned the district had a new state assessment this year, so scores are not comparable to last year. Hall also detailed recent professional development: an in-service that featured Dr. Wood and a presentation on ADHD by Chelle Boyd. Chetopa FFA received awards at the state fair and one student placed among the top 14 at the Greenhand conference.
Dr. Williams, assistant superintendent, reported failing refrigerators and freezers at Chetopa and discussed possible mitigation. Technology director Josh Brennon suggested installing battery backups to protect the equipment from power surges. Brennon also listed recent technology purchases, including two keyboards, a scoreboard part and a new Mac for the assistant superintendent, and noted the Chetopa sign was under warranty.
Janice Bone briefed the board on the new state assessment instrument and on LETRS training for teachers. The board discussed proposed student handbook changes but tabled that item for a later date.
The meeting proceeded to personnel and compensation items after executive session and adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
