USD 505 board approves hires, raises and cooperative wrestling agreement

The Unified School District No. 505 Board of Education approved a series of personnel actions and compensation increases at its Oct. 13 meeting in Labette County.
Board President Roberta Carter called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and, after routine approvals, the board voted unanimously to enter a cooperative agreement allowing Chetopa students to participate in wrestling with Columbus. Board member Seth Born moved to approve the agreement; board member Kari Chambers seconded and the motion passed 6-0.
The board approved several personnel hires after returning from executive session. Kari Chambers moved to approve the following appointments, and Seth Born seconded: Jessica Taylor, part-time (20 hours) custodian at St. Paul; Jennifer Washburn, St. Paul middle school girls’ basketball coach; Mark Haight, St. Paul middle school assistant boys’ basketball coach; Dani Cummings, St. Paul high school prom sponsor; Vince Yanez, Chetopa high school and Chetopa junior high head girls’ basketball coach; and Marcus Smith, Chetopa high school and Chetopa junior high head boys’ basketball coach. The motion passed 6-0.
On compensation, the board approved a $0.50-per-hour raise for classified hourly employees and agreed to pay for the lowest single health premium during months of employment (nine months for most employees; 12 months for custodial staff and secretaries), retroactive to July 1. Seth Born moved and Kari Chambers seconded that motion; it passed 6-0.
The board also approved salary adjustments for several administrators. Kari Chambers moved (seconded by Josh Brennon) to grant the following increases: Renee Gillard, $2,000; Jolene Hall, $2,000; Terri Ross, $3,000; Josh Brennon, $4,000; and Craig Bagshaw, $3,000. The motion passed 6-0.
Other procedural actions included approval of a new computer purchase for the assistant superintendent (a motion by Seth Born, seconded by Josh Baker) and changing the December meeting date to Monday, Dec. 1, 2025 (motion by Josh Baker, seconded by Kari Chambers); both motions passed 6-0.
The board entered multiple executive sessions under Kansas statute 75-4319 to discuss non-elected personnel matters, including separations, new hires and evaluations, with administrators called in as needed; the sessions ended and the open meeting resumed at 8:40 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
