Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue warns residents as wildland season ramps up

“We are in the heart of the wildland season,” Joe Shum, division chief for Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue, told the Citizen Advisory Board. Shum said the department’s packet included monthly statistics showing a slightly busier period than the same time last year, while the vehicle-accident rate was down by roughly two incidents compared with the rolling average.
Shum said the department has responded to 11 wildland incidents so far this year and praised recent aircraft retardant drops that, combined with rain, helped contain one local fire. He urged residents to be cautious: “No open fires, no charcoal, no backyard fire pits,” and advised people to call 911 if they see light wisps of smoke or larger columns of smoke.
The division chief also noted that the majority of calls remain medical in nature and repeated the department’s request that residents report suspicious smoke early. The board did not take action on the update; members thanked the fire representatives for the briefing and reiterated requests for continued community outreach on fire safety.
