McBee council hires outside attorneys as town says it will cooperate with a pending investigation

Robbie Liles moved to approve the hire of attorneys Ashley Story, Tina Cundari and Rose Mary Parham; Ricky Peoples seconded the motion and the council approved it by voice vote. After the vote, Odom said, “To clarify, the Fraternal Order of Police will pay and then there will be some extra money the town will have to pay, but we have it in the General Fund.”
The decision followed an earlier motion to enter executive session for legal advice related to police personnel matters, a law enforcement investigation and hiring legal counsel. The council later exited the executive session and Odom reported that the council had not made any motions or taken action while in executive session.
Odom said the town has committed to cooperating with law enforcement and instructed its attorneys to assist as necessary. The council did not provide additional details about the subject or scope of the investigation during the open meeting.
The hiring vote did not include a recorded roll-call tally in the minutes; the transcript records the outcome as a voice vote with all members in favor. The council also noted that the town’s General Fund will cover any fees beyond the amount paid by the Fraternal Order of Police.
