The Laredo Center for Urban Agriculture and Sustainability heard a presentation about El Cuentro and broader Foodtown programming and discussed paying a filmmaker to document an August weekend of events.
Presenter (speaker 8) described El Cuentro as a three-day series (Aug. 7–9) of harvests, workshops and demonstrations intended to promote native foods and position Laredo as a regional hub. The presenter said the selected filmmaker quoted $1,200 for coverage of the entire weekend and that the nonprofit Texas Indigenous Food Project is acting as fiscal sponsor. “We expect a very good turnout just based on prior buzz,” the presenter said.
Board members discussed funding options, including a possible match from CityMakery and paying the vendor up front with a later reimbursement request to the board if a formal vote or special call is needed. The presenter said the filmmaker’s footage would be used for promotional materials, grant applications and to show the city and potential funders the center’s activities.
Members also talked about logistics and outreach: bringing local chefs and vendors, partnering with Laredo Film Society to support production, and tracking event metrics for future funding requests. The board asked staff to circulate vendor quotes, a detailed budget and a proposed motion by email so members could act on short notice if necessary.
The board did not take a formal vote at the meeting; staff will follow up with cost estimates and a proposed reimbursement path.
