Donna Wilkerson announced her formal resignation from the Port Royal Town Council at the Feb. 27 meeting, saying she needs to focus on family health matters and that the decision had been under consideration for some time.
Mayor Alex Long and other councilmembers thanked Wilkerson for her service. The council discussed next steps for filling the vacancy; Town Manager Tim Smith advised publicly advertising the vacancy and inviting interested residents to the council meeting to explain their interest. The council did not appoint a replacement at the meeting.
The council also discussed possible candidates informally during the meeting; Mayor Long suggested former Planning Commission member Ms. Freiwald or her husband as possibilities, but the mayor emphasized the process would be public and follow an advertised application and interview period.
The resignation creates a vacancy on the council; the town manager is responsible for posting the opening and coordinating receipt of applications and candidate appearances before the council at a future meeting.
