Evart board approves Bookworms literacy program and continued Mystery Science access

The Evart Public Schools board approved two curriculum purchases aimed at the district’s elementary literacy and science instruction. The board voted to adopt Bookworms as the comprehension component of its elementary literacy revamp (motion approved; amount not to exceed $80,000) and approved continued access to Discovery Education’s product Mystery Science for K–8 (not to exceed $7,000).
Staff told the board Bookworms was selected after a committee reviewed several comprehension products and cited the program’s use of real trade books. “One of the things I like the most about Bookworms is it uses real trade books, authentic writing for students to be reading,” a staff member said during discussion.
Officials described Mystery Science as already in use in the district even though it had not previously been approved as a board-adopted curriculum resource; the purchase formalizes classroom access for the year. Both motions passed by voice vote.
Board members said the Bookworms adoption is a second step following earlier literacy work, with social studies companions under development to align cross-curricular instruction. The approvals were presented as part of an effort to strengthen early literacy and classroom resources across elementary grades.
