Reyes outlined how the elements align with coursework: "MCing" will reinforce English language arts through lyric analysis and rhetorical devices; "DJing" and beat production will connect to mathematics and audio engineering; graffiti will be taught as graphic arts and design; breaking will link movement to biology and physical education; and "knowledge of self" will emphasize social studies and history.
Reyes said the school will be open-enrollment and not a selective performing-arts program. "There is no audition," he said. "We are not a performing arts school. Kids who are interested, families who are interested, they can just apply through the MySchools platform from New York City Public Schools." He added that the model grew from prior work at MS 129, where he said engagement and achievement improved when students saw their culture reflected in learning.
School officials plan to emphasize both cultural relevance and academic rigor. "We want you to come in as your authentic self and, like, shine as bright as you can, and our job is to help you cultivate that," Reyes said.
