Loretto council approves Fun Fest contracts, equipment purchase and staffing moves; opts for shorter early voting window

The Loretto City Council approved a series of routine city business items and planning steps during its June 9 meeting.
On a motion by Brenda Daniels, seconded by Melissa Markham, the council approved the consent agenda, which included Resolution 2026-14 (Fun Fest donations), Resolution 2026-15 (continuing participation in the Hennepin County Community Development Block Grant program), Fun Fest vendor and activity agreements, and the May council minutes. The consent agenda also included June bills (electronic checks 5567E through 5599E and paper checks 26810 through 26851) totaling $80,285.63; council approval was unanimous.
The council approved the purchase of a tractor grader from Land Pride for $6,399.41 on a motion by Jeff Leuer, seconded by Ben Scanlon. Public Works Director Jake Leuer presented the funding proposal the council approved. The minutes record the vote as unanimous.
Council approved moving forward with hiring to fill a public works maintenance vacancy after Public Works Director Jake Leuer reported that Aaron Ende had accepted a position elsewhere. The motion to begin the hiring process was made by Melissa Markham and seconded by Brenda Daniels and carried unanimously.
Council also voted to approve Resolution 2026-16 to participate in the Met Council’s Small Communities Planning Program for assistance preparing the city’s 2050 comprehensive plan; the motion was made by Brenda Daniels and seconded by Melissa Markham and carried unanimously.
City Hall staff reported that Loretto will notify Hennepin County that it opts to conduct 18 days of in-person early voting for the 2026 elections rather than the full 46-day absentee period. The council assigned Council Members Jeff Leuer and Brenda Daniels to a Medina Police Contract Work Group to review a proposed change in the Medina police contract fee structure and directed City Clerk Treasurer Mary Schneider to contact owners of the Loretto Chop House for feedback about adding grease traps.
Informational items included Fun Fest planning, the Met Council annual population estimate and the fire department monthly report. Public Works Director Jake Leuer noted the Lexi Kretsch Softball Tournament will bring increased traffic beginning June 12. Mayor Kent Koch announced the Fox 9 Townball Tour on June 17, which includes a Twins youth clinic and media coverage.
The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m. on a motion by Brenda Daniels, seconded by Melissa Markham; the motion carried unanimously.
