Council approves $2,000 donation for Northwood FBLA, permits museum birthday celebration and Lions carnival

Saltville’s Town Council on March 11 approved several community-support requests and event permits, including a $2,000 donation to help Northwood High School FBLA students attend a state competition and permits for two summer events.
April Moore-Jones told council Northwood’s FBLA sent 12 students through from regionals, with four students placing first, four second and four third; she asked for donations to defray the cost of an upcoming four‑day state trip to Reston. Mayor Cheri Fullen asked for a motion to grant $2,000 from an administrative discretionary account; on motion of Suzanne Abramson with Thomas Dickerson seconding, council approved the $2,000 donation by roll-call vote. Moore-Jones thanked council, saying she and the students were “so grateful.”
Matt Prater, speaking for Friends of the Museum, requested a temporary road closure on Palmer Avenue for a Hobart Smith birthday celebration planned for May 10, 2025 (2–4 p.m.) on the town commons stage. On motion by Ryan Comer and second by Cary Sauls the council approved the closure.
Linda Larmer, representing the Saltville‑Rich Valley Lions Club, asked for approval to hold the Lions carnival July 16–19 and additional security while the midway is in town (midway to arrive July 13 and depart July 20). Council voted to authorize the carnival on motion of Thomas Dickerson, seconded by Suzanne Abramson. During that exchange Councilman Sauls raised a resident complaint that a Lions Club gate had been closed during the February flood, blocking an access route to Food Country; Larmer said she would investigate and report back.
Mayor Fullen and council also thanked volunteers, fire and rescue personnel and staff for flood response efforts, and Julie Loggins delivered an Emergency Communications Committee update describing the committee’s initial steps.
Council approved routine governance items as well (meeting agenda, minutes) during the session and took no further formal action on event logistics beyond the permits and donations recorded.
