Saltville youth recreation groups seek town help for helmets, field lighting and paperwork

Tristan Preece of the Saltville Recreation League asked the Saltville Town Council for help preparing for the upcoming youth football season, saying “helmets must be reconditioned every 2 years, and the cost was estimated at $2,500.” Preece asked the town to assist the league with paperwork and tax‑ID status so the program can operate more smoothly.

Adam Pugh, also with the Recreation League, described per‑player costs, equipment fees and insurance expenses that affect families’ ability to participate. A representative from Saltville Little League said the baseball program needs improved field lighting and help controlling weeds and overgrowth at the field.

The requests were presented during the council’s work session and were informational; council members did not vote to allocate funds or approve specific town action on the sports requests during the meeting. Town Manager Cecile Rosenbaum did not offer a funding commitment on the record and instead described existing administrative practices discussed later in the session regarding meeting materials and process.

Why it matters: Local youth sports programming relies on volunteer organizations and limited community resources; upgrades to equipment and field safety can affect program continuity and participation. The league’s funding and administrative needs, if addressed, could reduce out‑of‑pocket costs for families and improve field safety for children.

Council next steps: The council heard the appeals but did not take formal action on funding or field maintenance at the Feb. 25 work session. Any formal request for town funding, a budget amendment, or a future staff action would require separate agenda placement and a council vote.
