County accepts $1.61 million ODOT Safe Routes To School grant for Stayton Elementary improvements

The Marion County Board on April 16 approved a $1,608,019 Safe Routes To School (SRTS) grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation for the Stayton Elementary — North First Avenue project.
Public Works staff said the project will replace substandard or missing Americans with Disabilities Act ramps, add a rectangular rapid flashing beacon at First Street and Locust Street, and improve pedestrian crossings to increase accessibility for people using mobility devices. The grant is 100% state-funded and requires no county match. Staff outlined an immediate start to design work, anticipated right-of-way acquisition in 2027 and construction planned for 2028. The board approved the grant agreement by unanimous voice vote and noted there may be minor right-of-way impacts to neighbors as slope requirements are addressed.
The county said the grant will fund pedestrian-safety and ADA upgrades near the school and that staff will proceed with design and necessary property processes.
