Marion County approves $200,000 ODF agreement for patrols in Santiam State Forest

Sheriff’s Office Commander Jason Bernards told the Board on April 16 that Marion County would receive $200,000 from the Oregon Department of Forestry to fund overtime patrols in the Santiam State Forest and adjacent state-forest lands from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2030.
Bernards said the agreement is an ongoing arrangement that began in January 2020 and is intended to provide additional law-enforcement presence for workers and people recreating in state-forest areas. Commissioners clarified the agreement does not cover national forest lands and discussed options for partnerships to address unauthorized camping and fire risk on federal lands.
The board approved the intergovernmental agreement by unanimous voice vote.
