UDC allows a second attached sign for Fifth Third Bank on Camp Bowie, with limits

The Fort Worth Urban Design Commission on July 16 approved a modified sign plan for a Fifth Third Bank tenant in the Camp Bowie Boulevard district, allowing a second attached sign facing Hilldale Road while denying the other attached-sign waivers sought.
Inka Revere, senior plan examiner for preservation design, told commissioners the building already has a monument sign facing Camp Bowie and staff recommended allowing one additional attached sign facing the side street to provide identification without increasing visual clutter along the boulevard. “Based off the intent of the standard for Camp Bowie, I am recommending that table 9.1 be modified to allow a second attached sign facing Hilldale Road,” Revere said.
Applicant Marie Byrom, representing Fifth Third Bank, argued the tower element and existing streetscape and trees reduce visibility from Camp Bowie and sought more signage for wayfinding. Lydia Guajardo Rickard, executive director of Camp Bowie District Inc., opposed extra signage and argued the request would undermine the boulevard’s code purpose.
The commission accepted staff’s compromise and approved the modified certificate of appropriateness 7–0, allowing one attached sign facing Camp Bowie (by right) and one additional attached sign facing Hilldale Road.
The commission noted that multiple legacy and nonconforming signs exist along Camp Bowie but emphasized that new approvals should align with current code intent to reduce clutter.
