Monroe council proclaims the city welcoming to immigrants; residents voice support

The Monroe Common Council read and issued a proclamation Dec. 15 declaring Monroe a welcoming community for immigrants and newcomers, expressing the city’s commitment to inclusion and access to integration resources.
Reading the proclamation, the presiding officer said, "We declare Monroe a community that stands with you, values your contributions, and celebrates the diversity you bring." The proclamation text invoked the city’s appreciation for immigrant contributions to the local economy, schools and neighborhoods and was dated Dec. 15, 2025.
Three speakers signed up for public comment and addressed the council in favor of the proclamation. Al Hudson (1805 26th Street) urged council members "don't listen only to the vocal naysayers" and asked them to consider the "quiet majority" that welcomes immigrants. Laurel Pierthaler (531 27th Avenue), identifying herself as a school counselor for 22 years, said, "Humans are not illegal," and urged the council to use inclusive language and policies. Lou Dalton, representing Dando Unamano / Together We Rise, thanked the council for the dialogue and described an educational presentation on immigration to be held Thursday, March 26 at Union Presbyterian Church featuring a University of Wisconsin history professor, an immigration attorney and local immigrant speakers.
Council members thanked the commenters and the meeting record shows unanimous support for the proclamation and appreciation expressed by the presiding officer.
What’s next: the community event announced by Dando Unamano is scheduled for March 26 (6:30–8:00 p.m.) at Union Presbyterian Church; councilors and staff may publicize or attend per their schedules.
