The New Smyrna Beach City Commission on Feb. 25 approved a consent-item contract (item 7G) authorizing a contractor to demolish and rebuild three homes as part of a hazard-mitigation program. Commissioners confirmed these projects are demolish-and-rebuild (not house lifts) and said the eventual new structures will be elevated.
One commissioner announced a recusal because their own house is part of the contract; the chair acknowledged the recusal before the roll-call vote. After brief clarification from staff, the commission moved, seconded and approved the item by roll call; the mayor noted the motion carries.
In the boards-and-commissions section, the city clerk presented the application packet for Kathleen Brown, who was up for reappointment to the Code Enforcement Board for a third three-year term under state statute criteria. Commissioners reviewed the application materials provided by staff, discussed protocol for including all applicants in future packets, and voted to reappoint Brown.
The city clerk said she will provide an official notification of the reappointment.
