Minuteman committee approves Star Island field trip, hears graduation and facilities updates

The Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical School Committee on June 9 approved an out-of-state field trip for its environmental program and received reports on graduation and facilities projects.
Katie Bouchard, director of career and technical education, asked the committee to approve a trip to Star Island, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Sept. 15–18, 2026, for 16 students (seniors and sophomores) and three chaperones. "This is the 4th year that our environmental program is seeking approval to travel to Star Island," Bouchard said; the committee voted to approve the trip by roll call.
The principal reported on graduation logistics: the district held a June 1 graduation for 155 students that included a practice at Minuteman and a ceremony at Lowell Memorial Auditorium; staff and volunteer support, and a retiring staff member who read names, were highlighted.
On facilities, the capital-planning subcommittee reported that the North Building is nearing completion, large equipment was moved and will be calibrated, and that only one response was received for the Tremont Building RFP; members also noted ongoing neighbor and ZBA discussions concerning the veterinary sciences setup at Mill Street. The committee was told the district continues to incur maintenance costs for an empty building while the RFP process continues.
Superintendent Heidi Driscoll said the district is "waiting, with bated breath" for state guidance on competency determination and graduation requirements; if the state requires algebra II or a year-end assessment, the district may need to revise its program of studies and return to the committee in July.
The meeting also included an administrative hire announcement: Brian Hayes will join on July 1 as director of operations; Perrault was recognized for more than a decade of service before leaving for a new position.
