Council reviewed public safety capital needs during the FY2018-19 work sessions. City Manager Frank Frazier said the police department’s proposed budget includes the lease-purchase of six vehicles and $63,000 to pay for required upfit equipment. Police Chief Marcus Barrow said vehicle selection depends on intended use (pursuit versus everyday patrol) and noted manufacturers are changing production lines.
Fire Chief Steve Cordell told Council the FY19 budget includes the first payment for a new pumper truck due to arrive in early fall. The Fire Department requested replacement extrication equipment, a storage building for Station #1 and gas monitors; staff flagged the need for replacement radios that current models no longer support (estimated $4,000–$6,000 per radio). Both chiefs recommended phased radio replacement and discussed using city infrastructure to improve coverage.
Chief Cordell also raised the possibility of a Fire Service Study to evaluate a third station; the chief estimated the study cost at $30,000–$40,000. Council did not adopt final purchase orders in these sessions but included these items in the FY19 proposed budget and CIP discussions for later approval.
