Converse County moves forward with Natural Bridge Park picnic shelter replacements; bans food trucks until expansion

Converse County commissioners voted to move forward with plans to replace five picnic shelters at Natural Bridge Park and agreed to bar food trucks at the park until it is expanded.
Parks and Recreation Caretaker Christie Smith reported that Occidental Energy (OXY), through The Great Outdoors Fund, offered funding to replace all five picnic shelters. Smith estimated the overall project cost at $479,497 and said the county would be responsible for about half the cost. Commissioners directed that metal shelters be included in the FY2028 budget planning.
Commissioners also discussed persistent issues involving parking, noise, and nearby construction at LaPrele Dam. Because of limited parking and concerns about fair access for vendors, the board determined that food trucks will not be allowed at the park until the county expands parking and addresses access considerations. The board reappointed Randy Pexton to the Converse County Parks & Recreation Board to continue oversight of park planning and events.
