Board approves Badger Drive bus-wash replacement; members ask about underbody wash upgrade

The Waukesha City Board of Public Works voted Sept. 4 to award the rebid for the Badger Drive bus-wash replacement to the Ross and White Company after staff reported the single bid "did come in under budget," and recommended moving forward with the base bid.
Alex, a city public-works staff member, told trustees the rebid returned one responsive bidder and that firms able to fit a bus wash into the existing building are limited. "We did receive 1 bid from the Ross and White Company," Alex said. Staff recommended accepting the base bid rather than add alternates for an underbody system at this time.
Board members pressed the issue of an underbody wash. One trustee said an $80,000 underbody system would "help keep the salt off the bottom of the buses and vehicles" and asked staff to discuss with fire, parks and capital planning whether those departments could share the cost. Alex said the base bid will proceed but staff would explore scraping together funds to add an underbody flush in the future.
Trustees also confirmed that many city vehicles, including most engines and ambulances, would fit through the new wash and that very large ladder trucks would not. After a motion and second, the board voted to approve the base bid; the motion carried.
Next steps include completing contract paperwork and discussing potential funding options for an underbody wash with other city departments and capital planning.
