Committee to serve on Artscape placemaking steering; gallery and memorial updates given

Staff told the committee it plans to conduct staff-level interviews with four firms for an Artscape placemaking plan and said committee members would participate on a steering committee to guide art, landscaping and lighting elements that will tie into Friedman Alley.
The presenter noted interviews are scheduled to begin immediately and that committee members should expect more information at the next meeting. “You guys will be part of the steering committee that will be with that artscape plan,” the presenter said, describing the plan’s broader focus beyond murals.
Staff also reported updates to the gallery artist application and said there would be one more intake in September before the program year restarts in October. Committee members discussed outreach to area high schools to encourage student participation.
Beth Wilson reminded the group of a parade memorial remembrance scheduled for Nov. 21, saying a sculpture dedication would occur if the artist finishes the work in time. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn and a vote to close the session.
Next steps: staff will notify committee members of steering-committee details, follow up on gallery outreach and compile mural scoring prior to the Sept. 9 meeting.
